The Spanish built a mission of Santa Helena de Macchaba at what is now the city of Madison. The charm of the deep south is most evident in this and many of the other northern Florida counties. Before the Civil War, cotton was the cash crop and it was grown on some the largest plantations in the south. Madison county is still agriculturally based with meat and poultry added. A quiet place with friendly people.
